Normally, during the beginning of the year, I am reloading or doing research on new hunting areas in SoCal. This year started out that way until I got the itch to go shoot some new bows. A few months back, before the kick-off to Corona season, I shot numerous bows and decided to purchase one. The only drawback is there was a 10-12 week wait for the bow I wanted and I had an upcoming, out-of-state pig hunt. Decision time!
Let me step back a minute. I had a perfectly good hunting bow all set up. I could have simply used that, but I had an itch I needed to scratch. I don’t usually want to buy a flagship bow or even a brand new bow. With all the incredible technology and knowing what I wanted to look for, I needed to shoot some bows and really make a decision.
Back to my dilemma or purchasing my bow. I opted to purchase the 2020 Mathews VXR 31.5 in Ambush Green from a private party. I ordered it at 70# with a 28″ DL (the Mathews bows tend to run long in the draw, so for my 28.5″ draw, this worked out very well). To say this bow shot incredible would be a dramatic understatement. It was like buttah! I would have it in hand right before my hunt aaaaaaaannnnnnddddd then COVID-19 came in like a kick to the groin. My bow came in on time and the hunt was postponed. Bittersweet timing. That being said, I looked on the bright side. I had time to start shooting and deciding what accessories I wanted to add to it.
Immediately, I ordered a custom set of strings and cables from Piranha Bowstrings. I get so happy when Piranha strings are on my bow. I have the utmost confidence in them and they perform beautifully. Eddy knows how to build excellent strings that perform!
Stacking on the other accessories came easy. First, I added the new TETRA Max TE single pin sight from HHA Sports. Every year they impress me and this year was no exception. It had to go on the new bow. I did try something new in regards my my arrow rest. While I have been very happy with my HHA Virtus Rests on my other bows, I wanted to challenge myself and go with a limb-driven rest this year. After some research and texts to my fellow bowhunting buddies, I opted to go with the Trophy Taker SmackDown Pro – Mathews Edition. I also added the TightSpot RISE Moss Green 5-arrow quiver. TightSpot has been my go-to quiver for years due to their reliability and rugged build. I also did something new this year. I was doing plenty of research on stabilization and decided I would not only go with a stabilizer, but also a back bar. After year of struggle, I figured out that by using one I may save myself a great seal of stress. Added to the mix was the TORX Hunting Stabilizer Kit from Custom Bow Equipment (CBE). Victory arrows would still be used as I love their performance and durability.
Even though I only have up to 20 yards to practice, I started slinging arrows right away. I knew my Piranha strings would be in soon and I wanted to be ready. I shot over and over and my arrows kept hitting left. That would be a challenge to overcome, but I knew with some help I could get it fixed. When my strings arrive, I’ll be sure to go through all of the details of installation and getting the bow dialed in perfectly. Until then, it’s time for me to shoot some more!
