Having shot handguns for years and having practiced with seasoned professionals, I was capable and confident in my shooting ability. I’m also aware that a person needs training in all they do to learn and stay fresh. Up until May 2025, I had never taken an actual handgun or pistol class or training. I signed up for Defensive Pistol training with Middle Tennessee Firearms Training in Lynnville, TN with an open mind and plenty of ammo. Why did I choose MTFT? They run their business based on Christian beliefs, are a local company and they take training seriously. Count me in!

If you’ve never taken a handgun class, I encourage you to do it. I’m a firm believer if you concealed carry, you should obtain some hands-on instruction. Especially after now taking a class and learning so much I thought I knew. Jeremy Zimmer (Instructor Z) and his wife Terry, both NRA Certified Pistol Instructors and USCCA Certified Firearms Instructors, put on a complete class that is safe, inclusive and fun. Inexperienced to experienced, everyone is welcome.
My goals for taking the class were quite simple; I wanted to learn, find my strengths, figure out my weaknesses in order to properly shoot. Defensive Pistol covered it all at a well-balanced pace. Some needed more instruction, while others had more experience, but no one complained. No one said they were too good for a drill. Instead, watched and listened closely, plus we talked and we shared experiences. We joked, laughed and watched intently as each shooter progressed.
The drills were quite simple, but did they ever humble me. I am very confident with my Walther PDP-F equipped with a Holosun SCS PDP green dot. I can shoot well at my own pace, but when drawing from an IWB position and presenting, I was lost! Well, I lost my dot because my presentation was weak. It was clear to me that was where I needed to train more. With some guidance from Instructor Z, I was able to temporarily correct it on a few drills and felt more confident as my shots rang steel.
The banter between Jeremy and Terry was playful and fun. It allowed us all to laugh and not be so serious that we didn’t enjoy their training. Their guidance was direct, yet calm. By the way, never hand off your phone to Instructor Z without expecting some hilarious video to be found later on. He got me good and lesson learned!

After the class, I asked him where I could improve and his comments were exactly what I expected. Consistent dry-fire training and practice presenting in a consistent manor. I completely agree with his assessment and appreciate his candor.
How many classes have you taken where the instructor finishes off the day in prayer? I can name one. Jeremy and Terry Zimmer run a top-notch firearm training business. Not only do I recommend Middle Tennessee Firearms Training, but I will be returning for more classes and instruction. Pricing is reasonable, they maintain a safe, fun environment and the instruction is superb. Do yourself a favor and sign up for one of their classes, but do it soon as classes tend to fill up quickly. Time for me to find my next firearm training experience with Middle Tennessee Firearms Training. I hope to see you there!
